As soon as the first teeth come through, and no later than their first birthday. Coming early helps children get used to us and lets us catch problems in good time. That first appointment is a gentle look in their mouth, often while they sit on your lap, plus advice on brushing, food and teething.

Bringing them along to one of your own dental examinations first can help the practice feel familiar, and if you tell us about their worries when you book, we can plan around them.

Why Baby Teeth Matter

Baby teeth keep space for the adult teeth coming through, shape your child's face, and help them chew and talk clearly. Although they fall out, decayed baby teeth can still hurt and become infected, which is why early treatment matters.

Teenagers are welcome as well, for dental examinations, hygiene advice and keeping watch on wisdom teeth. Where braces are needed, we'll talk you through the choices and, if it's the best route, refer your child to an orthodontist.

If your child plays contact sports, a custom-made mouthguard (£135) protects their teeth far better than a shop-bought one.

Helping Visits Go Smoothly

Pick an appointment time when your child tends to be rested and has eaten

Keep dentist talk upbeat, and steer clear of words such as "hurt" or "needle"

Let them come with you to one of your dental examinations first, so the practice isn't new to them

At Peninsula Dentists, 26-28 Chandlers Avenue, Greenwich Peninsula, next to Greenwich Millennium Village. We see children and teenagers privately, and a child examination is £28. The entrance is on the ground floor, street parking nearby is limited, and North Greenwich station is about ten minutes' walk.
