Gum Disease Treatment in Greenwich: Bleeding Gums, Treated Properly

Gingivitis and periodontitis assessed, treated in stages and kept under control by Stefanie Goodall, our dental hygienist, with Airflow cleaning and a plan for keeping it away. No referral needed.

Classic Smile Clean £99, deep clean £165, gum treatment £100 per stage over four stages, or 10% less for dental plan members, whose hygiene visits are included.2

The Signs

Gum disease tends to be painless until it is well established. Look out for these early signs, which are easy to miss.

Bleeding When You Brush

Healthy gums don't bleed. Blood in the sink is often the first sign of gingivitis, and a reason to keep cleaning, not to brush more gently.

Red, Swollen or Tender Gums

Plaque along the gum line makes it inflamed.

Bad Breath or a Bad Taste

It comes from bacteria beneath the gum; mouthwash simply covers it up.

Receding Gums

Teeth appear longer and exposed roots feel sensitive.

Loose or Drifting Teeth

When bone is lost, teeth can shift and gaps appear between the front teeth.

Beyond Your Mouth

Research links periodontitis with diabetes, heart disease and complications in pregnancy. Inflamed gums also make diabetes and implants harder to keep under control.

Gingivitis or Periodontitis?

Same cause, different stages, different treatment.

Gingivitis: the gums are inflamed but the bone is unaffected. A professional clean and better home care reverse it completely
Periodontitis: the inflammation has spread to the bone, and the gum has come away from the tooth to form pockets. Lost bone won't regrow, but the disease can be halted
It is worse, and slower to treat, in people who smoke, have diabetes, are under stress or take certain medicines
We measure the pockets around each tooth to tell which one you have, and how advanced it is

Our guide to periodontal disease, its stages and treatment

How It Works

1

Assessment

We measure the gum around each tooth and take X-rays of the bone. You receive a gum score and a clear, honest account of where things stand.

2

Hygiene Phase

Stefanie cleans thoroughly above and just under the gum line, using Airflow to lift plaque and stain, then shows you on your own teeth the home cleaning that will change things.

3

Gum Treatment in Stages

If you have periodontitis, the pockets below the gum are deep cleaned under local anaesthetic, one section of the mouth at a time, across four stages (£100 each).

4

Review and Maintenance

We measure the pockets again to see what has healed. After that, three-monthly hygiene visits keep it away, as gum disease returns whenever plaque does.

Why It's Worth Treating

More adults lose teeth to gum disease than to anything else, yet most of it can be prevented. Treated early, gingivitis goes away completely. By the periodontitis stage, any bone already lost is gone for good, but the disease can still be stopped and the teeth kept for decades.

Every other treatment depends on it as well. An implant needs healthy gum, a crown or bridge is only as sound as the teeth beneath it, and Invisalign needs healthy bone to move teeth through. So whatever we plan for you, the gums are treated first.

Gum treatment is part of what Stefanie, our hygienist, does every day. Both dental plans include hygiene visits, and members save 10% on the deep clean and each gum treatment stage.

At Home

Above all, clean between your teeth daily, using interdental brushes that fit your gaps
Twice a day, spend two minutes brushing where tooth meets gum, ideally with an electric brush
If your gums bleed, carry on gently rather than stopping; with good cleaning it settles in a week or two
Give up smoking, which slows healing and hides the warning sign of bleeding gums
With diabetes, good blood sugar control helps your gums, and healthier gums in turn help your blood sugar
Don't miss your three-monthly visits, because disease restarts in the gaps between them
