Implants and Full Arch
25 questions
Will I have to go without teeth at any stage?–
No. On Healed Foundation you keep wearing your own denture while the implants heal; on Staged Treatment, a removable temporary denture goes in as your teeth come out; and with Same-Day or Premium, you leave surgery with fixed temporary teeth wherever your bone allows.1 With a single implant at the front, a temporary tooth fills the space while it heals, so there's no gap to hide.More on All-on-4 and Full-Arch Implants ›
How long do dental implants last?+
Looked after well and maintained regularly, an implant can serve you for decades, although the crown or bridge attached to it may eventually need renewing through ordinary wear. When implants do fail, the usual culprits are smoking, gum disease and skipped hygiene appointments.More on Dental Implants ›
Am I too old for implants?+
No age is too old. We look at your general health, how much bone you have and whether you can keep the implant clean. Plenty of people have implants placed successfully in their seventies and eighties.More on Dental Implants ›
Not enough bone for implants: can treatment still go ahead?+
Our on-site CT scan measures the bone you have and shows exactly where it is. Shorter or angled implants, or a bone graft, often make treatment possible. At your consultation we'll tell you plainly what can be done.More on Dental Implants ›
Does implant surgery hurt?+
We numb the area thoroughly, so you'll feel pressure and vibration but no pain, and most people find it easier than the extraction was. Most manage the next few days with everyday painkillers. If you're anxious, Dr Imran Riaz offers IV sedation.More on Implant-Retained Dentures ›
Is there a guarantee on implants?+
Yes. Our implants are MegaGen AnyRidge, and treatment carries a five-year guarantee for non-smokers who keep up three-monthly hygiene visits. Your consent form sets out the full terms, and we go through them with you before anything starts.More on Dental Implants ›
Which implants do you use?+
We use MegaGen AnyRidge, which carries the Trusted Quality seal from the CleanImplant Foundation, awarded for a clean implant surface. Dr Imran Riaz plans each one on the CT scanner we have on site, then places it through a 3D-printed guide using MegaGen R2 guided surgery.
What does the implant fee include?+
For a single tooth the fee starts at £2,250. It covers the implant, guided placement through a 3D-printed guide, the abutment that links implant to crown, the crown itself, review appointments during healing and a five-year guarantee for non-smokers who keep up three-monthly hygiene visits. If you need a CT scan (£120), a bone graft, an extraction or sedation, these are added separately, and every item is listed in your written plan before you commit.2More on Dental Implants ›
What are the risks of implant treatment?+
Expect a few days of swelling, tenderness and perhaps some bruising; that's normal healing. Less commonly the area becomes infected, or an implant fails to fuse with the bone, in which case it can usually be taken out and replaced once the site has settled. Your CT scan maps the nerves and sinuses, so the implant is positioned well away from them. Smoking, gum disease and diabetes that isn't well controlled all increase the risk, and we discuss each one with you before you decide.More on Dental Implants ›
How do I look after an implant?+
Care for it as you would your best natural tooth: brush twice daily, use interdental brushes between your teeth every day, and keep coming to your dental examinations and your hygiene visits every three months, which protect the gum and bone around it and keep our implant guarantee valid. If you grind at night, a night guard will protect the crown.More on Dental Implants ›
If I can't have fixed teeth on surgery day, what happens instead?+
On the Same-Day and Premium pathways, fixed teeth on surgery day come down to your bone, both its quality and how firmly each implant grips once it's in place. If they aren't stable enough, you'll wear a temporary denture while you heal and move to your fixed bridge afterwards, and your pathway fee does not change. Dr Riaz will tell you at consultation which route is more likely, and your written plan explains the alternative, but same-day teeth can't be promised until the implants are in and he has measured how stable each one is.More on All-on-4 and Full-Arch Implants ›
Is the full-arch fee per arch?+
Yes. All four of our full-arch pathways are priced for one arch, so treating the upper and lower jaw counts as two, and clip-in implant dentures are likewise priced per jaw. Your written plan gives the full total before anything begins, with any extras, such as sedation or more extensive bone grafting, listed.2More on All-on-4 and Full-Arch Implants ›
Where can I get dental implants in Greenwich?+
At Peninsula Dentists, 26-28 Chandlers Avenue on Greenwich Peninsula, about ten minutes' walk from North Greenwich station. Dr Imran Riaz plans and places implants here with our on-site CT scanner, MegaGen AnyRidge implants and guided surgery, and he also carries out All-on-4 full-arch treatment. Single-tooth implants, crown included, start at £2,250, and full-arch implants at £9,300 per arch. Consultations are free, and Canary Wharf is five minutes away on the Jubilee line.More on Dental Implants ›
How much are dental implants in London?+
At Peninsula Dentists on Greenwich Peninsula, a single implant including its crown starts at £2,250. That price includes planning, guided placement, the abutment, the crown and our five-year guarantee for non-smokers who keep up three-monthly hygiene visits. Any CT scan (£120) or bone grafting you need is charged on top. You can spread the cost at 0% over 6 or 12 months with Chrysalis Finance, subject to status.2More on Dental Implants ›
Where can I get implant-retained dentures in Greenwich?+
At Peninsula Dentists, 26-28 Chandlers Avenue, Greenwich Peninsula SE10 0GE. The denture clips onto implants, normally two for a lower denture or four for an upper, which Dr Riaz plans on our on-site CT scanner and places through a 3D-printed guide. Your consultation is free, and we're ten minutes' walk from North Greenwich on the Jubilee line.More on Implant-Retained Dentures ›
How much are implant-retained dentures in Greenwich?+
An implant-retained denture at Peninsula Dentists starts at £8,500 per jaw. What you pay depends on which jaw is treated and how many implants it needs, normally 2 for the lower and 4 for the upper. A CT scan, where needed, is £120, and after a free consultation your fixed fee is set out in writing.More on Implant-Retained Dentures ›
How many implants does a clip-in denture need?+
Normally 2 for a lower denture and 4 for an upper. Bone in the upper jaw is softer, so it takes more implants to hold the denture firmly.More on Implant-Retained Dentures ›
Can my existing denture be clipped onto implants?+
No. You'll need a new denture, made with the attachments set into it, so it fits the implants precisely and holds up over time. Your current denture stays in use while the implants heal.More on Implant-Retained Dentures ›
Clip-in denture or fixed teeth: which should I go for?+
A clip-in denture needs fewer implants, costs less and comes out for cleaning. Fixed full-arch teeth sit on 4 implants, or up to 6 on some pathways, stay put day and night, and feel much closer to natural teeth. Your CT scan and consultation will show which suits your bone, your budget and what you'd prefer.More on Implant-Retained Dentures ›
How do I look after an implant-retained denture?+
Remove it twice a day to clean it, and brush gently around the implants and along your gums. Keep your hygiene visits and dental examinations going. The small clips inside the denture gradually wear and are swapped at a routine appointment.More on Implant-Retained Dentures ›
What happens at a dental implant consultation?+
We begin by talking about what bothers you and going through your medical history, then examine the space, your gums and how your teeth meet. If you need a CT scan (£120), we take it here on site. You go home with a written plan setting out the option we recommend, the full fee and what it covers, with no obligation to proceed.More on Implant Consultation ›
Is a referral from my usual dentist needed for implants?+
No referral is needed. You can book an implant consultation with us directly, and plenty of our implant patients carry on seeing their usual dentist for dental examinations. We're happy to send your dentist a copy of your plan if you'd like.More on Implant Consultation ›
Do I leave the implant consultation with a full price?+
Yes. The written plan you take away shows the complete fee for your treatment, including any extras like grafting or a temporary tooth. Once you decide to go ahead, that figure stays the same.More on Implant Consultation ›
Can I get a second opinion on implants?+
Yes, and like every implant consultation it's free. Bring along any X-rays, scans or treatment plans you've been given. If someone has told you there isn't enough bone, our CT scan will show exactly how much there is, and grafting or angled implants frequently open up options.More on Implant Consultation ›
Who places implants at Peninsula Dentists?+
Dr Imran Riaz, an oral surgeon with an MClinDent in Oral Surgery from the Eastman Dental Institute and more than 13 years dedicated to oral surgery. He plans every implant on our on-site CT scanner and places it through a 3D-printed guide, from single teeth to complete arches.More on Dental Implants ›
Sedation
6 questions
Will I be asleep?–
No. Conscious sedation is not a general anaesthetic. You'll feel deeply relaxed while still able to respond to us, and afterwards most people recall very little of the appointment.More on Sedation ›
Does someone need to take me home?+
Yes. An adult needs to collect you after sedation and keep you company for the rest of the day. For the next 24 hours, don't drive, drink alcohol, use machinery or sign anything important.
Can I have sedation for a dental examination?+
We use sedation for treatment, not for dental examinations. A session is £500, with £250 for every extra 30 minutes. If a dental examination is what worries you, mention it when you book: we'll take things as slowly as you need, tell you what each step involves before we do it and keep the visit as short as you like.More on Sedation ›
I haven't been to the dentist in years. Where do I start?+
Start with a message or a phone call. Let us know how you're feeling and we'll suggest an easy first step, which might simply be a chat. Lots of our patients had stayed away for years before they found us, and nobody here will lecture you.More on Nervous Patients ›
What if I panic during treatment?+
Say so, or give the stop signal we agree before we begin, and we'll stop immediately. We'll pause, talk about what happened and only continue once you feel ready. If you'd rather finish another day, that's fine, and we'll rebook you at a time that suits.More on Nervous Patients ›
Can I be sedated if I'm very nervous?+
Yes, for treatment. Dr Imran Riaz, our oral surgeon, provides IV sedation at £500 per session. It's given together with local anaesthetic, leaving you calm and the tooth completely numb. We don't sedate for dental examinations; for those we simply work at your pace.More on Nervous Patients ›
Hygiene and Gum Health
11 questions
How often should I see the dental hygienist?–
Every three to six months for most people, depending on your gums. Gum disease often calls for three-monthly visits, and with implants or a fixed full-arch bridge we advise them too, because our implant guarantee depends on them. Book with Stefanie directly; once she has assessed your gums at your first visit, she'll suggest the interval that suits you.
What is air polishing?+
Airflow, as air polishing is often known, sprays a fine mix of warm water, air and powder that lifts plaque and staining gently, even around implants, bridges and braces. Our Diamond Smile Clean includes it, and it's part of hygiene visits on both dental plans.More on Hygiene and Air Polish ›
Does a hygiene visit hurt?+
For most people it's comfortable. If your gums are sore or inflamed, we can numb them before we start, and Airflow feels much gentler than the gritty polishing paste you may remember.More on Hygiene and Air Polish ›
Why do my gums bleed when I brush?+
Most often it's inflammation from plaque sitting at the gum line. Carry on cleaning, gently but thoroughly; if the bleeding hasn't settled after two weeks, book in with our hygienist.More on Hygiene and Air Polish ›
How much is a hygiene visit?+
Our Classic Smile Clean, a 30-minute visit, is £99, and the Diamond Smile Clean with Airflow is £134; dental plans include both. A 60-minute deep clean costs £165, or £149 on a plan.
How much does gum disease treatment cost in Greenwich?+
At Peninsula Dentists, a Classic Smile Clean is £99 and a 60-minute deep clean £165. Treatment for periodontitis is £100 for each of four stages.2 On a dental plan, hygiene visits are included and treatment is 10% less. Stefanie Goodall assesses your gums first and tells you exactly what's needed.More on Gum Disease Treatment ›
Can gum disease be cured?+
Gingivitis can: after a professional clean, and with good daily cleaning, the gums go back to health. Periodontitis can't be fully cured, since lost bone doesn't regrow, but treatment halts it and three-monthly maintenance keeps it stable for the long term.More on Gum Disease Treatment ›
Is gum treatment painful?+
We numb the area for each deep-cleaning stage, so it feels like pressure rather than pain. Your gums may be tender for a few days afterwards, which everyday painkillers usually settle, and teeth can stay slightly sensitive to cold for a few weeks while the gums heal. Most people don't need anaesthetic for a routine hygiene visit, and Airflow is kinder than scraping.More on Gum Disease Treatment ›
How often will I need to come?+
Every three months once treatment is finished. There's a reason for that timing: bacteria rebuild below the gum in roughly twelve weeks, and regular visits stop periodontitis taking hold again. Plan B includes four hygiene visits a year, which matches it.More on Gum Disease Treatment ›
Are implants still possible after gum disease?+
Yes, once your gums are healthy and stable. The bacteria behind gum disease can attack the bone around an implant too, and an implant placed where the gums are inflamed has a higher chance of failing, so we treat the gums first. After that, three-monthly maintenance looks after your natural teeth and your implants together, and it's also a condition of our implant guarantee.More on Gum Disease Treatment ›
Does gum disease cause bad breath?+
Frequently. Bacteria in the pockets around your teeth, where a toothbrush can't reach, release sulphur compounds that cause lasting bad breath, and mouthwash only masks the smell. Once the gums are treated and kept stable with regular hygiene visits, the breath usually improves.More on Gum Disease Treatment ›
Crowns and Fillings
20 questions
How long do dental crowns last?–
Usually 10 to 15 years, and well beyond that if you look after them. Grinding, gum disease and decay where the crown meets the tooth all cut that short, so cleaning between your teeth, regular dental examinations and, if you grind, a night guard help it last.More on Dental Crowns ›
Where can I get a dental crown in Greenwich?+
At Peninsula Dentists on Chandlers Avenue, Greenwich Peninsula, SE10 0GE. Ceramic crowns start at £650 for a front tooth and £650 for a back tooth, and we take a digital iTero Element scan instead of putty impressions. Expect two appointments: the first to shape and scan the tooth, the second to fit your crown.2More on Dental Crowns ›
Crown, onlay or filling: how do you decide which I need?+
That comes down to how much sound tooth remains. A small cavity is filled; bigger damage across the biting surface is often best restored with an onlay; and a tooth that's badly broken or root-filled usually needs a crown. We'll show you why on your X-ray and scan.More on Dental Crowns ›
How much does a white filling cost in Greenwich?+
At Peninsula Dentists, the price of a white filling depends on which tooth it is and how many surfaces it covers. One surface starts at £105 on a front tooth and £118 on a back tooth, and a three-surface filling on a back tooth is £165.2 Dental plan members pay 10% less, and you'll know the fee before we begin.More on White Fillings ›
What does 'surfaces' mean on the price list?+
Each tooth has five faces: the top you bite on, the side facing your cheek, the side facing your tongue, and the two sides that meet the teeth next to it. Filling one face is quickest. Wrapping a filling across two or three takes more time and material, which is why the price goes up with each surface.More on White Fillings ›
Should I replace my metal fillings?+
Only when there's good cause, such as a crack, decay beneath it, an edge that's leaking, or because you dislike seeing it when you smile. An amalgam filling in good condition can be left alone, since swapping it unnecessarily costs you more tooth. X-rays at your dental examination show which ones are breaking down.More on White Fillings ›
Does a filling hurt?+
No. We numb the tooth before starting, so you'll feel pressure and vibration, not pain. For a very small filling, some people prefer to skip the injection. Teeth can feel a little sensitive to cold for a week or so afterwards, which is normal.More on White Fillings ›
How long does a white filling take?+
Usually a single appointment of between 30 and 60 minutes, depending on how big it is. A curing light hardens the composite straight away, so you can eat as soon as the numbness wears off.More on White Fillings ›
How much is a night guard in Greenwich?+
At Peninsula Dentists, a night guard made to fit from an iTero scan is from £135. A hard occlusal splint starts at £620, a sports mouthguard at £135 and an anti-snoring device at £620.2 On a dental plan you save 10%.More on Night Guards and Mouthguards ›
Do I need a night guard?+
Probably, if you wake up with headaches or a sore jaw, your front teeth are looking flat or chipped, or crowns and fillings keep failing. We can see the pattern of wear at your dental examination. If you grind and have bonding, veneers or implants, a guard is inexpensive protection for them.More on Night Guards and Mouthguards ›
Night guard or occlusal splint?+
A night guard is a thin shield for ordinary grinding. A hard occlusal splint is a rigid appliance fine-tuned to your bite across several appointments. It's used for heavy grinding, marked wear or pain in the jaw joint, where calming the jaw muscles is as important as protecting your teeth.More on Night Guards and Mouthguards ›
Can a dentist help with snoring?+
With straightforward snoring, yes. A mandibular advancement device keeps your lower jaw a little forward while you sleep, which helps keep the airway open. If your snoring comes with gasping, pauses in breathing or tiredness during the day, it could be sleep apnoea; see your GP or a sleep clinic first, and a dental device may then form part of your treatment.More on Night Guards and Mouthguards ›
Are custom mouthguards better than boil-and-bite?+
Yes. A guard made from a digital scan is slimmer, stays put, lets you speak and breathe freely and spreads the force of a blow evenly, so players actually keep it in for the whole game. Shop-bought guards are bulky and shift about, which is why they end up in the kit bag.More on Night Guards and Mouthguards ›
How long does a mouthguard last?+
With regular use a sports guard lasts one or two seasons, and it needs remaking after dental work, if your teeth shift, and as a child grows. Night guards usually give a few years, depending on how heavily you grind; if you've worn holes in yours, it has done what it was made for and needs replacing. Bring it to your dental examinations and we'll check the fit and look for thin spots.More on Night Guards and Mouthguards ›
Can I eat straight after a filling?+
Yes, once the numbness has gone. A curing light hardens the composite before you leave, so the filling is ready at once. Until feeling returns, though, it's easy to bite your tongue or cheek without noticing.More on Aftercare Advice ›
What causes jaw pain?+
In most cases it's the jaw-closing muscles, worn out by clenching and grinding, typically at night and often linked with stress. Sometimes the joint is to blame instead: its disc can slip, which produces a click, or the joint can wear. A bite thrown out by a filling that sits too high, or by missing teeth, can set off either.More on Jaw Pain and TMJ ›
Is a clicking jaw serious?+
A click without pain is common and usually just needs watching. If it hurts, or your jaw catches or locks, it's worth having it looked at, since a splint and some changes in habit generally keep it from worsening.More on Jaw Pain and TMJ ›
Will a night guard stop jaw pain?+
If the pain comes from clenching and grinding at night, it usually eases within a few weeks as the muscles finally get some rest. When the joint itself is at fault, a hard occlusal splint, adjusted over a few appointments, does more than a soft guard.More on Jaw Pain and TMJ ›
Can a dentist diagnose TMJ problems?+
Yes. We diagnose temporomandibular disorder by listening to your symptoms and examining the joint, the muscles and your bite, taking an X-ray where it helps. If anything suggests you need a specialist, for example a jaw that keeps locking, we'll arrange a referral.More on Jaw Pain and TMJ ›
Does stress cause jaw pain?+
Often, yes. When you're stressed you clench more, particularly while asleep, and your jaw muscles bear the strain. Catching yourself clenching during the day, plus a night guard for the hours you're asleep, helps most.More on Jaw Pain and TMJ ›
Root Canal Treatment
6 questions
Where can I get root canal treatment in Greenwich?–
You'll find us at Peninsula Dentists, 26-28 Chandlers Avenue, Greenwich Peninsula SE10 0GE. Our dentists provide root canal treatment once they've examined the tooth and taken an X-ray, and if you're in pain, call before 9.30am and we can usually see you the same day. We're ten minutes' walk from North Greenwich on the Jubilee line, and five minutes from Canary Wharf.More on Root Canal Treatment ›
How much does root canal treatment cost in Greenwich?+
At Peninsula Dentists, root canal treatment starts at £590 on an incisor, £690 on a premolar and £790 on a molar; dental plan members pay £531, £621 and £711. When a tooth is painful, an emergency first stage to settle it is £199. Most back teeth then need an onlay or crown, priced separately.More on Root Canal Treatment ›
Does root canal treatment hurt?+
We numb the tooth with local anaesthetic first, so it feels very similar to having a filling. It's normal for the tooth to be a bit tender for a few days, and everyday painkillers usually handle that. Far from causing pain, the treatment is what ends the pain of an infected tooth.More on Root Canal Treatment ›
How many visits does root canal treatment take?+
One or two in most cases. Where a tooth is badly infected or very sore, the first appointment cleans it out and leaves a dressing inside, and the second completes and seals it. A back tooth then usually needs one or two more visits for its onlay or crown.More on Root Canal Treatment ›
Will my tooth need a crown once root canal treatment is done?+
For a back tooth, usually yes. Once root-filled, back teeth crack more easily, and an onlay or crown guards against that. Front teeth can often be finished with a filling instead. The onlay or crown is priced separately from the root canal treatment: a ceramic onlay is from £650 and a back-tooth crown from £650.More on Root Canal Treatment ›
Root canal or extraction: which is the better choice?+
Where possible, saving your own tooth is the better choice. A root-filled tooth that's well restored can keep going for decades, and it generally costs less than an extraction followed by an implant or bridge. If yours can't be saved, we'll talk you through the ways to replace it.More on Root Canal Treatment ›
Dentures, Bridges and Extractions
18 questions
How much do dentures cost in Greenwich?–
At Peninsula Dentists, an immediate acrylic denture costs £600. Partial acrylic dentures start at £600, full acrylic dentures at £750 and cobalt chrome at £1,200, while an implant-retained denture costs from £8,500 per jaw.2 You'll have the exact figure in a written plan before we make anything, and dental plan members pay 10% less.More on Dentures ›
How long do dentures take to make?+
Typically three to five appointments spread over a few weeks: a scan or impressions, a try-in if the denture is a larger one, the fit, then an adjustment. An immediate denture is prepared ahead of the extraction and fitted on the day, with a reline once your gum has healed.More on Dentures ›
Will my denture be loose?+
Give a new denture a few weeks to settle in. A well-fitting upper denture generally creates a good seal. A full lower denture is harder to keep steady, as there's less gum and bone for it to grip, and that's where two implants beneath it help most. If an older denture has worked loose, a reline usually tightens it up.More on Dentures ›
Can a denture be repaired or relined?+
Yes. We can add a tooth to your current denture (£105), reline a loose one while you wait (£110), and fix most breaks. Please don't try glue at home, which harms the acrylic; bring it to us instead.More on Dentures ›
Should I take my dentures out at night?+
Yes. Your gums need a break from the pressure, and sleeping in dentures is associated with soreness and fungal infections. Overnight, leave them soaking in water or a denture-cleaning solution, and give your gums and tongue a brush before bed.More on Dentures ›
How much does a dental bridge cost in Greenwich?+
At Peninsula Dentists, resin-retained bridges cost £550 a unit for an immediate bridge and £650 a unit for a definitive one, while a conventional bridge is from £550 a unit.2 Replacing one tooth takes one or two units with a resin-retained bridge, and usually three with a conventional bridge. You'll see the total in your written plan before any preparation.More on Dental Bridges ›
What is a Maryland bridge?+
It's another name for a resin-retained bridge. A replacement tooth is attached to a slim wing of metal or ceramic, which is bonded behind the neighbouring tooth. It needs little or no drilling and two appointments, and it's often our first suggestion for a missing front tooth or as a stopgap while an implant heals.More on Dental Bridges ›
Bridge or implant for a missing tooth?+
A resin-retained bridge is faster and less expensive, and it treats the teeth beside it gently. An implant is independent of other teeth and preserves the bone in the gap, though it means minor surgery and several months of healing. Where the neighbouring teeth are healthy and free of fillings, we'd normally favour a resin-retained bridge or an implant over crowning them to hold a conventional bridge.More on Dental Bridges ›
How many units is a bridge?+
Every tooth in the bridge is one unit, whether it's the replacement or one of the supports. To replace a single tooth, a conventional bridge is normally three units, with a crown on each side holding the false tooth in the middle. A resin-retained bridge for the same gap is normally one or two.More on Dental Bridges ›
Are the neighbouring teeth harmed when a bridge is fitted?+
With a conventional bridge, the teeth that support it are shaped to take crowns, which means losing healthy enamel if they've never been filled. A resin-retained bridge, by contrast, involves little or no shaping, so we choose it whenever your bite allows.More on Dental Bridges ›
How long does a dental bridge last?+
Usually 10 to 15 years, and frequently more, provided the teeth holding it stay clear of decay and gum disease. Daily cleaning beneath the false tooth and regular hygiene appointments make the real difference.More on Dental Bridges ›
How much does a tooth extraction cost in Greenwich?+
At Peninsula Dentists, a routine extraction starts at £150. If stitches and a collagen plug are needed it's £220, and surgical or wisdom tooth removal with Dr Imran Riaz starts at £295.2 Should you want IV sedation, it's £500 a session. We confirm the fee before we begin.More on Extractions and Wisdom Teeth ›
Do wisdom teeth always need removing?+
No. If a wisdom tooth has erupted straight and you can keep it clean, it can be left. We recommend removing one that's impacted, half-erupted with repeated infections, decayed because your brush can't reach it, or damaging its neighbour in front. An X-ray, sometimes with a CT scan, tells us which applies.More on Extractions and Wisdom Teeth ›
Does having a tooth out hurt?+
We numb the tooth and surrounding gum completely, so you'll be aware of pushing and movement, not pain. It's usual to feel sore for a few days, which everyday painkillers handle. Wisdom teeth and surgical extractions ache for longer, and swelling tends to be worst on the second or third day.More on Extractions and Wisdom Teeth ›
Can I be sedated for an extraction?+
Yes. Dr Imran Riaz, our oral surgeon, provides IV sedation (£500 a session) for surgical extractions, for removing several teeth in one go, or simply if you're nervous. You stay awake but very relaxed, recall little afterwards, and will need someone to take you home.More on Extractions and Wisdom Teeth ›
What is dry socket?+
It's what happens when the blood clot comes away from the socket before the gum has healed, typically three to five days after a tooth is taken out, and it's painful. The common triggers are smoking, vigorous rinsing and drinking through a straw. It isn't harmful, and once we've placed a dressing it calms down within a few days.More on Extractions and Wisdom Teeth ›
What's the healing time after a tooth extraction?+
Soreness usually fades within a few days, or a little longer after surgical removal, and the gum closes within one to two weeks. The bone beneath needs a few months to fill the socket, so an implant into a healed site is normally planned around three months on.More on Extractions and Wisdom Teeth ›
Can I have an emergency extraction today?+
Often, yes. We hold same-day appointments for anyone in pain, whether or not you're registered here, and emergency appointments are £70. Ring 020 8788 6688 before 9.30am, and if the tooth can be saved rather than removed, we'll say so.More on Extractions and Wisdom Teeth ›
Bonding and Veneers
23 questions
Does composite bonding damage my teeth?–
Usually not. The composite is built onto the tooth's surface, with little or no enamel taken away. When we do smooth a small amount, it's to blend the composite invisibly into your tooth and give it more surface to grip, which makes it stronger and longer lasting. Dr Pei will explain what your teeth need.More on Composite Bonding ›
How long does bonding last?+
Typically three to five years, sometimes more, before it needs refreshing. A polish at each hygiene visit keeps it looking good, and a small chip can normally be fixed in one quick appointment.More on Composite Bonding ›
Can bonding be whitened?+
No. Composite stays the shade it was when placed, and neither whitening gel nor whitening toothpaste changes it. If you want brighter teeth, we whiten them first, give the colour around a fortnight to settle, then shade-match the composite to the new colour.More on Composite Bonding ›
Should I choose porcelain or composite veneers?+
Porcelain is longer lasting and stain resistant, though a fine layer of enamel usually has to be removed. Composite involves little or no preparation and is cheaper, but you'll refresh it more often. Our veneers guide sets the two side by side.More on Porcelain Veneers ›
What is composite bonding used for?+
It uses tooth-coloured composite, sculpted by hand onto your teeth, to mend chips, close small gaps, level worn or uneven edges and improve shape and colour. Applied across several teeth as composite veneers, it can transform the whole smile.More on Composite Bonding ›
What are the benefits of composite bonding?+
It keeps your enamel largely intact, is usually completed in one or two appointments, costs less than porcelain and can be repaired if it chips. On the other hand, composite can pick up stains and wear down, so expect to refresh it after three to five years.More on Composite Bonding ›
Where can I get composite bonding in Greenwich?+
At Peninsula Dentists on Greenwich Peninsula, with Dr Pei Xian Chen. A single tooth starts at £375, and a four-tooth package, which includes whitening, is £1,550. The consultation is free. How much do veneers cost in Greenwich?+
At Peninsula Dentists, a porcelain veneer starts at £650 a tooth and a composite veneer at £375 a tooth. The smile design and trial smile come included, and once you've had a free consultation your fee is fixed in writing. Most people have between six and ten teeth done.2More on Porcelain Veneers ›
Where can I get veneers in SE London?+
At Peninsula Dentists on Greenwich Peninsula, where we provide both porcelain and composite veneers. We design every smile digitally and let you try it in your mouth as a trial smile before anything permanent happens.More on Porcelain Veneers ›
How long do porcelain veneers last?+
Looked after well, frequently 10 to 15 years or longer. They most often need replacing because of grinding, biting on hard objects or changes in the gums, so a night guard, regular hygiene visits and never using your teeth as tools all help. Composite veneers tend to need refreshing after 3 to 5 years.More on Porcelain Veneers ›
Does getting veneers hurt?+
We numb the teeth with local anaesthetic before preparing them, so it feels like pressure, not pain. A few days of sensitivity afterwards is common. Preparation is kept minimal, so we alter as little of each tooth as we can, and the trial smile beforehand involves no drilling at all.More on Porcelain Veneers ›
Can I see my veneers before they're made?+
Yes. Your new smile is designed digitally around your own face, and then a trial version is fitted over your teeth so you can look at it, speak with it and take photos before a single tooth is prepared.More on Porcelain Veneers ›
How much does composite bonding cost in Greenwich?+
At Peninsula Dentists one tooth is from £375. Each package also includes home whitening, a follow-up review and a polish: four teeth £1,550, six £2,350, eight £3,150 and ten £3,950.2 Practices around Greenwich and SE London we checked in October 2026 publish bonding at about £180 to £450 a tooth, so check whether whitening, a review and a polish are included before comparing headline prices. Treatment from £1,500 can be paid over 12 months interest free.More on Composite Bonding ›
What's included in a bonding package?+
Boutique home whitening first (£350 if bought separately), so your composite can be matched to the brighter shade; the bonding, sculpted by hand by Dr Pei Xian Chen; a review visit; and a finishing polish. Bigger cases also include a digital smile design. Four teeth with whitening costs £1,550, which means the bonding itself works out at £300 per tooth without the whitening.More on Composite Bonding ›
Does composite bonding hurt?+
Generally not, and since little or no enamel comes off, most people manage without an injection. You'll notice your teeth being cleaned, kept dry and shaped, but there's no pain. If we need to smooth a little enamel, we can numb that tooth beforehand. Soreness afterwards is rare, and you can eat normally as soon as the composite has set.More on Composite Bonding ›
Can I have composite bonding after Invisalign?+
Yes, and we pair the two often. Once your teeth have been straightened, less composite is needed because they're already where they should be; bonding then tidies the edges and fills any little gaps left over. We wait a short while after your last aligner, and since bonding alters the shape of your teeth, we check your retainers and remake them if the fit has changed.More on Composite Bonding ›
Who isn't suitable for composite bonding?+
Composite has to bond to healthy teeth and gums, so any decay or gum disease is dealt with first. If you grind heavily it will chip more readily, and a night guard or porcelain may be wiser. Crowded or very dark teeth usually do better straightened or whitened beforehand, and a large change of shape across every tooth may be better done with porcelain veneers. At your consultation we'll tell you plainly if bonding isn't right for you.More on Composite Bonding ›
Can composite bonding be removed or replaced?+
Yes. With little or no enamel taken away in the first place, composite can be polished off or redone without damaging the tooth beneath. We regularly replace tired or stained bonding done elsewhere, often in a single appointment, and you can see examples of our work in the smile gallery.More on Composite Bonding ›
Are porcelain veneers reversible?+
No. To make a veneer sit flush we usually remove a fine layer of enamel, and from then on that tooth must always be covered by a veneer or crown. For that reason we design your smile digitally and try it in your mouth before touching any tooth, and if whitening, bonding or Invisalign would achieve the result with less tooth involved, we'll recommend that instead.More on Porcelain Veneers ›
Veneers or crowns?+
A veneer sits over the front surface of a tooth and needs only a fine layer of enamel removed; a crown encloses the whole tooth and needs more taken away. Veneers are for healthy teeth that need a new shape or shade. A tooth that is cracked, root-treated or heavily filled generally needs a crown, from £650 at the front. We'll tell you at consultation which you need, and whether a veneer would be enough.More on Porcelain Veneers ›
What's included in the veneer fee?+
Before any preparation, your written plan gives the fee for each tooth, starting at £650 for porcelain.2 It includes your smile design and trial smile (otherwise £250 and £250), the temporary veneers you wear while the porcelain is made, the fitting and a review appointment. If you'd like the neighbouring teeth brighter, whitening them beforehand is £350.More on Porcelain Veneers ›
How long do porcelain veneers take?+
Three to four weeks from design to fit is typical, across three appointments: smile design and trial smile, then preparation with temporaries, then fitting. Any whitening or straightening happens before the design stage and lengthens the timeline. We don't offer same-day porcelain veneers, because the time spent in the laboratory is what makes them look natural.More on Porcelain Veneers ›
Who does porcelain veneers at Peninsula Dentists?+
Dr Pei Xian Chen, who holds a Postgraduate Certificate in Advanced Aesthetic Restorative Dentistry. He plans and provides veneers at the practice himself, so you see the same dentist for your design, trial smile, preparation and fit.More on Porcelain Veneers ›
Smile Makeovers
6 questions
Where can I get a smile makeover in Greenwich?–
At Peninsula Dentists, 26-28 Chandlers Avenue on Greenwich Peninsula. A smile makeover brings together treatments like Invisalign, whitening, bonding and veneers, carried out in a sensible order. We design it digitally around your face and let you preview it as a trial smile before you decide, and the smile design is part of your treatment fee. North Greenwich station on the Jubilee line is ten minutes' walk away.More on Smile Makeover ›
How effective are smile makeovers?+
Very, when the whole smile is planned together. Aligning the teeth first, then whitening, then adding bonding or veneers keeps changes to your teeth small and makes everything match. You wear a trial of the new smile before treatment, so you know roughly what to expect. Its lifespan depends on the materials used and how well you care for it.More on Smile Makeover ›
How much does a smile makeover cost?+
That depends on which treatments you combine. At Peninsula Dentists, a makeover with whitening and bonding on six teeth starts at £2,350, and you'll have a fixed fee in writing after a free consultation. Treatment from £1,500 can be spread with finance, subject to status.2More on Smile Makeover ›
Where can I get cosmetic dentistry in Greenwich?+
At Peninsula Dentists on Greenwich Peninsula, a short walk from The O2 and North Greenwich station. We offer composite bonding, porcelain and composite veneers, Enlighten and Boutique whitening, Invisalign and smile makeovers, each planned digitally and previewed before treatment starts. Canary Wharf is five minutes away on the Jubilee line.More on Cosmetic Dentistry ›
How long does a smile makeover take?+
That varies with the treatments involved. Whitening followed by bonding can be completed in a few weeks. If your plan begins with clear aligners it will usually run for several months, and implants add time for healing. The sequence and timings are set out in your written plan before anything starts.More on Smile Makeover ›
Is there a way to preview my new smile before going ahead?+
Yes. We plan the design around your face, then fit a trial version over your own teeth so you can see how it looks, speak with it and photograph it. Both the smile design and the trial smile are part of your treatment fee.More on Smile Makeover ›
Invisalign and Whitening
21 questions
Aligners: how many hours a day should they be in?–
Aim for 20 to 22 hours every day. Remove them for meals and for any drink except water, and brush your teeth before you put them back.More on Invisalign ›
Do I need retainers afterwards?+
Yes. Teeth tend to creep back towards where they started, and wearing retainers, usually overnight, protects your result for years. Every Invisalign package at Peninsula includes Vivera retainers.More on Invisalign ›
Is teeth whitening safe?+
Yes, provided a dentist prescribes and oversees it with regulated products. Short-lived sensitivity is common and fades once you finish.More on Whitening ›
Why can't under-18s have whitening?+
Under UK law, professional whitening products can't be used on under-18s unless it's to treat or prevent disease. The rule covers every practice and every product, so cosmetic whitening has to wait until 18, when we're happy to look at it again.More on Whitening ›
How long does Invisalign take?+
A straightforward case may need only a few months, while more involved ones usually take 12 to 18. Dr Pei checks your progress every 6 to 8 weeks.More on Invisalign ›
Will my result match the 3D simulation exactly?+
No. It maps out how your teeth should move, which helps us pick the right package and shows you the probable outcome. Everyone's teeth respond a little differently, and wearing your aligners as instructed matters most. We check how you're getting on at each review.More on Invisalign ›
Is Invisalign right for everyone?+
Aligners can treat most adult straightening, though not all of it. If your bite would be better served another way, Dr Pei will explain at your consultation and talk you through the alternatives.More on Invisalign ›
Are refinements included?+
Yes. Should your teeth need fine-tuning near the end, the additional aligners, known as refinements, are covered by your package, as are Vivera retainers and whitening.More on Invisalign ›
Where can I get Invisalign in Greenwich?+
At Peninsula Dentists on Greenwich Peninsula, ten minutes' walk from North Greenwich station. We've held Invisalign Diamond Apex status every year from 2022 to 2026, placing us in the top 1% of providers in Europe. Dr Pei Xian Chen plans and provides your treatment: Lite from £1,795, Moderate from £3,000 and Comprehensive from £3,500, every package including refinements, whitening and Vivera retainers. Invisalign or braces: what are the advantages of aligners?+
Aligners are close to invisible, they come out for meals and brushing, and their smooth plastic has no brackets to rub your cheeks. They correct most of the problems braces do. For severe bite or jaw issues fixed braces can work better, and aligners only succeed if you wear them for 20 to 22 hours daily. We'll tell you at your assessment which suits you.More on Invisalign ›
How does teeth whitening work?+
A peroxide gel of professional strength penetrates the enamel and breaks up the stains that make teeth look darker, lightening them from the inside. For Boutique home whitening we scan your teeth for custom trays and prescribe the gel, which you wear for a short spell daily across two to three weeks while we keep an eye on progress. Enlighten adds an in-practice session and guarantees a B1 shade. Crowns, veneers and fillings won't change colour.More on Whitening ›
Where can I get teeth whitening in Greenwich?+
At Peninsula Dentists on Greenwich Peninsula, an Enlighten Centre of Excellence. Boutique home whitening, using trays made for your teeth, costs £350 (£315 for dental plan members), and Enlighten, with a guaranteed B1 shade, is £650. Whitening comes with every Invisalign and composite bonding package. UK law allows only dental professionals to provide it.More on Whitening ›
How long does teeth whitening last?+
Typically a year or longer, sometimes several years, depending on your diet, what you drink and whether you smoke. Hold on to your trays and use top-up gel when needed. An Airflow polish at your hygiene visit also clears surface staining.More on Whitening ›
Is professional whitening better than a shop kit?+
Kits sold in shops are limited to 0.1% hydrogen peroxide, so they mostly shift surface stain. A dentist can prescribe gel of up to 6%, the UK maximum, in trays made to fit from a scan, and checks your teeth and gums before you start.More on Whitening ›
How much does Invisalign cost in Greenwich?+
At Peninsula Dentists, Invisalign Lite is from £1,795, Moderate from £3,000 and Comprehensive from £3,500. Every package comes with your scans and X-rays, refinements, whitening, a hygiene visit and Vivera retainers.2 Practices around Greenwich and SE London we checked in October 2026 publish full courses from about £2,450 to £4,950, and some quote per jaw from £1,450; the lowest prices are often for one arch or a short course, so check what each includes. Spread over 12 months at 0%, Lite works out at £150 a month.4
What does the Invisalign fee include?+
All of it: iTero Element scans and X-rays, every aligner your plan calls for, refinements should your teeth need extra movement, Vivera retainers (£350 separately), a hygiene visit (£99) and Boutique home whitening (£350). Paid for individually, the retainers, whitening and hygiene visit would total £799. The fee in your written plan is fixed before treatment begins.
Why are some Invisalign quotes so much cheaper?+
Mostly because the quote covers one arch only, a brief course of 7 to 14 aligners, or leaves out the scan, refinements, retainers and whitening. Ask what the price covers, what happens if you need more aligners than expected, and whether the price is guaranteed in writing. Our packages include everything listed, and what's in your plan is what you pay.
The company supplying my aligners has closed. Can you help?+
Yes. Book a free consultation with Dr Pei and bring anything you still have, such as your latest aligners, any retainers and the treatment plan if you received one. After an iTero scan he'll tell you plainly whether to complete the movement with Invisalign, keep your teeth where they are with new retainers, or leave them alone. There's a £40 deposit, returned after you attend, and no obligation.
What if I lose or break an aligner?+
Ring us that day. Depending on your stage, we'll normally have you return to your last set or start the next one slightly early, and we'll order a replacement if you need it. Hang on to each old set until we say otherwise, so you always have a backup.More on Aftercare Advice ›
Can Invisalign fix an overbite or underbite?+
Mild and moderate cases, yes, and crossbites of that degree too, since aligners can reposition teeth so they meet better. Where a severe bite problem is caused by the position of the jaws, not the teeth, braces or specialist orthodontics, sometimes with jaw surgery, may be needed, and we'll let you know at your scan.
Do you offer fixed braces?+
No. We straighten teeth with Invisalign, which works for most adults and is the treatment our Diamond Apex status recognises. If fixed braces or specialist orthodontics would do a better job, for instance where a severe bite problem comes from the jaws, Dr Pei will tell you at consultation and arrange a referral to a specialist orthodontist instead of pushing aligners past their limits.More on Invisalign ›

New Patients and Emergencies
30 questions
What should I expect at my first appointment?–
We talk about why you've come, examine your teeth, gums and the rest of your mouth thoroughly, take X-rays if they're needed, and give you your options in writing, each with its fee.
I'm nervous. Can I just come and talk first?+
Of course. You can book a free consultation purely for a chat, and we'll only look in your mouth if you want us to. Or start by sending us a WhatsApp message about how you're feeling.
I'm in pain. Can you see me today?+
Ring 020 8788 6688 before 9.30am and we'll aim to see you the same day. Emergency slots are held back every day we're open, Monday to Saturday, whether or not you're already a patient. The appointment is £70, free for dental plan members, and if the tooth needs root canal treatment we can often make a start there and then to ease the pain. When we're closed, NHS 111 can advise.More on Dental Abscess ›
I've knocked a tooth out. What should I do?+
Pick it up by the white biting part and avoid touching the root. Give it a quick rinse in milk, then press it back into the gap if you can; if not, keep it in milk. Phone us and aim to be seen within an hour, because the sooner it goes back in, the better its chance of surviving. Don't put a baby tooth back in.More on Broken Tooth ›

Will antibiotics fix my toothache?+
In most cases, no. Toothache rarely has a cause antibiotics can deal with, and they're only called for when infection is spreading or you feel generally unwell. What fixes it is dealing with the tooth itself: filling it, root-treating it or, where it's beyond saving, removing it.More on Emergencies ›
Is Peninsula Dentists on Greenwich Peninsula?+
Yes. We're at 26-28 Chandlers Avenue, beside Greenwich Millennium Village. North Greenwich station and The O2 are about ten minutes' walk away, buses 108, 129, 132, 161 and 486 stop at Millennium Village Oval Square, and Westcombe Park station is under a mile from the door.More on Dentist in Greenwich ›

Where can I park near Peninsula Dentists?+
Street parking near the practice is limited, so if you're driving, allow time to find a space. Many patients come by Jubilee line to North Greenwich or by bus to Millennium Village Oval Square. Our entrance is on the ground floor.
Is the online smile assessment free?+
Yes. WhatsApp us two or three photos and a short note on what you want to improve, and one of our dentists will reply with a suggestion and a likely price range based on our published fees. It costs nothing and commits you to nothing. If you want to take it further, the consultation is also free, with a £40 deposit returned once you've attended.More on Online Smile Assessment ›

Will a photo be enough for you to give me an exact price?+
We can give you a range, but not a fixed fee. A photo usually lets a dentist suggest the right treatment and what it costs on our price list, for example £1,550 for bonding on four teeth. Your exact fee follows in writing after an examination, or after a scan for implants and Invisalign.More on Online Smile Assessment ›
What if I'd rather not use WhatsApp?+
Ask for a call back on the website and a member of the team will ring at a time that suits you. Alternatively, book a free consultation online and ask us in person. Photos can also be emailed to reception@peninsuladentists.co.uk.More on Online Smile Assessment ›
Can you repair a broken tooth on the day I come in?+
Frequently. We can usually bond a chip on the day, while a bigger break is repaired with a filling or build-up, or covered with a temporary until a crown is ready. The emergency appointment costs £70, and we give you a written quote for the permanent repair first.More on Broken Tooth ›
My chipped tooth isn't painful. Should I still get it fixed?+
Usually, and sooner is better. Once enamel chips, the softer dentine below is exposed to wear and decay, and every bite can extend a crack. Fixing it while it's small costs far less than a crown or root canal treatment down the line.More on Broken Tooth ›
Why does my broken tooth hurt with cold?+
The break has uncovered dentine, which passes sensation straight to the nerve, and sealing the area with a filling or bonding normally settles it. If the pain lasts for minutes, throbs without a trigger or wakes you at night, the nerve is probably inflamed and the tooth will need root canal treatment.More on Broken Tooth ›
My tooth has broken off at the gum line. Can it be saved?+
It depends. Sometimes a build-up and crown will rescue it; sometimes not. We take an X-ray to see whether enough healthy root sits above the bone. If the tooth can't be kept, we take it out gently and discuss replacing it with an implant, a bridge or a denture.More on Broken Tooth ›
Will antibiotics cure a dental abscess?+
No. They can settle an infection that's spreading, and we sometimes prescribe them alongside treatment, but they can't get to the dead nerve inside the tooth, so the abscess comes back when the course ends. Clearing it takes root canal treatment or removing the tooth.More on Dental Abscess ›
Will a dental abscess clear up without treatment?+
The pain may fade, especially once the nerve dies or the swelling bursts and drains, but the infection remains in the bone and returns, often more severely. Toothache that suddenly stops hasn't been cured, so have the tooth examined.More on Dental Abscess ›
Is a dental abscess dangerous?+
Most abscesses are painful rather than dangerous, but infection spreading under the tongue, down into the neck or up towards the eye can become serious. Go to A&E rather than a dentist if swelling makes it hard to breathe or swallow, you have a high temperature, or the swelling is getting bigger by the hour.More on Dental Abscess ›
Can the tooth be saved?+
Often it can. Root canal treatment takes out the infected pulp and then seals the canals. If it's split right through, broken off below the gum or has too little bone left, removing and replacing it is the better option. We'll know which from an X-ray at your emergency appointment.More on Dental Abscess ›
What happens if I miss an appointment?+
Missing a free consultation means the deposit isn't returned. If you cancel late we still refund it, but please give us 48 hours' notice where possible so the slot can go to someone in pain. Running behind? Phone us and we'll let you know whether there's still time. We send reminders by text, so make sure we have your latest number.More on How We Work ›
Is a second opinion free?+
Yes. You book it as you would any consultation, so it's free, with a £40 deposit refunded once you've attended. Should we need a CT scan to answer your question, it's £120, and we'll tell you before we take one. You're under no obligation to have treatment with us.More on Second Opinion ›
Do I need to tell my own dentist?+
No. A second opinion is your own business, and we'll only contact your dentist if you want us to. If you go ahead with treatment here, we can send them a copy of the plan to keep your records complete.More on Second Opinion ›
Can I get my X-rays from another practice?+
Yes. You have a right to copies of your records, scans and X-rays included, so your old practice can email them to you or send them straight here. Up-to-date X-rays mean we needn't repeat them, and if they can't be obtained, we'll take what's necessary.More on Second Opinion ›
Is a check-up just another name for a dental examination?+
Yes, they're the same appointment. We assess your teeth, gums and bite, check the soft tissues inside your mouth, take X-rays where they're needed, then go through anything that needs treatment, with its cost. We use the word examination because it describes the appointment more accurately. It costs £30 for a routine visit, and both dental plans include it.More on General Dentistry ›
