Night Guards and Mouthguards in Greenwich: Protect Your Teeth, Day and Night

Guards and splints made to measure from a digital iTero Element scan: for grinding at night, for contact sport, for jaw pain and for snoring. Because each one fits your teeth precisely, it is comfortable enough to keep wearing.Guards for grinding or sport, a splint for jaw pain, a device for snoring: each made from a digital scan.

A night guard is £135 and a sports mouthguard £135; hard occlusal splints start at £620 and anti-snoring devices at £620. Dental plan members pay 10% less.2

Which One Do You Need?

They do different jobs. At your examination, your dentist will tell you which suits you and whether anything should be treated first.

Night Guard

Thin and worn while you sleep, it carries the force of grinding and clenching instead of your teeth, and shields your fillings, crowns, veneers and bonding (£135).

Hard Occlusal Splint

For heavy grinding, worn teeth or a painful jaw joint: a firm splint adjusted precisely to your bite, which also lets the jaw muscles relax (from £620).

Sports Mouthguard

Made to measure for contact sport, from rugby, football and hockey to boxing and martial arts. You can talk and breathe while wearing it, so it actually stays in (£135).

Anti-Snoring Device

For simple snoring: a mandibular advancement device keeps the lower jaw a little forward while you sleep, so the airway stays open (from £620).

Retainers

Essix retainers (£214 one arch) keep straightened teeth where they are; Vivera retainers come with every Invisalign package.

Protecting Dental Work

If you grind, wearing a guard helps veneers, bonding, crowns and implant teeth last longer.

Signs You Grind or Clench

Grinding usually happens without you knowing. The signs show up in your teeth and jaw.

A sore jaw, tight cheeks or a dull ache at the temples when you wake
Front teeth that look flatter, shorter or chipped, or crowns and fillings that break repeatedly
Notches near the gum line, or teeth that feel sensitive
A jaw joint that clicks or locks, or a partner who can hear you grinding at night

Our guide to night guards, grinding and clenching

How It Works

1

Examination

We look for wear and strain on your teeth, bite and jaw joints, and make sure nothing else needs treating before the guard.

2

Scan

A digital iTero Element scan of both arches; no putty impressions. A dental laboratory then makes your guard from that scan.

3

Fitting

We try it in and make small adjustments until it feels comfortable and your bite lands evenly.

4

Review

A few weeks later we check it's working, and adjust it if needed.

Shop Guard or Custom?

For a single night, a chemist's boil-and-bite guard beats having nothing. The trouble is that it is bulky and shifts about, so most people give up on it within weeks, and a guard protects nothing once it's in a drawer. One made from a scan is thin and secure, and we adjust it so your bite meets it evenly.

A night guard won't stop the grinding itself; what it does is shield your teeth from the damage. If stress, a sleep problem or the jaw joint seems to be behind it, we'll tell you. For jaw pain and heavy wear, the next step is a hard occlusal splint, refined over several visits.

Snoring devices suit simple snoring. If loud snoring comes with gasping, pauses in breathing or sleepiness during the day, it may be obstructive sleep apnoea; your GP or a sleep clinic should assess that first, after which a dental device can form part of the treatment.

Looking After It

After each use, rinse it under cold water and brush it softly; hot water will warp it
Store it in its case to dry, away from sunlight and pets
Bring it along to each dental examination, and we'll check how it fits and how it's wearing
When a night guard wears through, it has served its purpose and needs replacing
Sports mouthguards need remaking when teeth shift or dental work changes, and as children grow
