Layered Like Natural Enamel

Good bonding takes time and care. Dr Pei places the composite by hand in thin layers, each a different shade and translucency, so every tooth reflects light as natural enamel does.

We start from your own teeth and shape each one to your face and to the proportions of your smile. With that level of care the result is improved but still natural, so people notice your teeth rather than the bonding.

Most teeth lose little or no enamel. If a fine layer is taken, the composite blends invisibly into the tooth and has more surface to grip, so it is stronger and lasts longer. We'll explain at your consultation what your own teeth need.

Whiten Before Bonding

Whitening gel has no effect on composite. If you want a brighter smile, you whiten first, over two to three weeks, and we then match the bonding to that new shade.

The shade most people pick is B1, which still looks natural. You can go lighter, or keep it suited to your age, whatever result you have in mind.

What Happens

From your first visit, most bonding is complete in three or four weeks, whitening included.

1

Free Consultation

We take photos, check your bite and tell you plainly what bonding can and can't achieve for you. There's a £40 deposit, which we refund once you attend.

2

Whiten at Home

You whiten with custom trays for two to three weeks, so we match the composite to your new, brighter shade rather than the old one.

3

The Bonding Visit

Edge bonding is usually done in one visit; composite veneers take one or two. Dr Pei layers each tooth by hand before shaping and polishing it.

4

Review and Polish

We see you again to check your bite and the finish. From then on, polishing at hygiene visits keeps it glossy.

Bonding or Porcelain Veneers?

Each can alter the shape and colour of your teeth. They differ in how much of the tooth is treated, how long they last and what they cost.

Bonding Suits You If

Your teeth are healthy apart from chips, worn edges or small gaps
You're after a result in one or two visits, with minimal drilling or none
Keeping your enamel, and your future options, matters to you
You've just completed Invisalign, or your teeth are already straight enough
Occasional polishing, and a refresh every few years, suit you fine

We May Suggest Something Else If

You're after a major change of colour and shape on every tooth: porcelain veneers achieve that better, and for longer
Your teeth are crowded or protruding: if we straighten them first with Invisalign, far less composite is needed
You grind your teeth hard: bonding is more prone to chipping, so porcelain or a night guard may be wiser
There is decay or gum disease to deal with: we treat it beforehand so your bonding lasts

Caring for It

3 to 5 yearsis the usual span before a refresh, and good care can extend it
Polishedduring routine hygiene appointments, so it stays glossy
Repairablea chip is usually mended in a single short appointment
Conservativewith little or no enamel taken away; we'll explain what your teeth need

Composite gathers stain over the years, just as natural teeth do, and smoking, tea, coffee, red wine and turmeric speed that up. We'll give you an honest estimate of how long yours should last.
