What to Do Now

What you can do before we see you.

Knocked-Out Adult Tooth

Pick it up by the white crown and avoid touching the root. Give it a quick rinse in milk, then press it back into the socket if possible; if not, store it in milk. You need to be seen within the hour.

Severe Toothache

Take over-the-counter painkillers at the dose shown on the pack. Keep away from very hot or very cold food, and phone us for an appointment.

Swelling

Phone us that day. If it spreads fast or makes breathing or swallowing difficult, go to A&E.

Broken Tooth or Filling

Save any pieces and rinse your mouth with warm water. Until you're seen, a little sugar-free gum pressed over a sharp edge helps.

Lost Crown

Put the crown somewhere safe and bring it to your appointment. Please don't try to glue it back on yourself.

Bleeding After an Extraction

Fold a clean, damp gauze or tissue and bite down on it firmly for 20 minutes. Still bleeding after that? Call us.

Your Emergency Visit

We work to relieve your pain before you leave.

Call before 9.30am to be seen the same day, Monday to Saturday, patient or not. New patients can also book online.

Find the Cause

We examine the tooth, take an X-ray if needed, and tell you what we find.

3

Relieve the Pain

Most often done there and then: we place a dressing or temporary filling, settle an infection, or begin root canal treatment.

Planning What's Next

You hear the choices for a lasting repair and what each costs, then decide in your own time.

Do I Need Antibiotics?

In most cases, no. Most toothache has a cause that antibiotics can't fix; we prescribe them only when infection is spreading or you're feeling unwell. What ends the pain for good is treatment on the tooth: a filling, root canal treatment, or extraction if it can't be saved.

Out of Hours

Dental pain or swelling outside our opening hours that can't wait? Call NHS 111 for advice.

Emergency Fees

An emergency visit costs £70, whether you're our patient or not. Free for dental plan members.2
