Whiten, Bond or Veneer?
A straightforward guide to matching the problem to the treatment, what each one costs, and how to combine them without paying twice.
Should I Have Whitening, Bonding or Veneers?
Match the treatment to the complaint. Healthy teeth that are simply too dark need whitening and nothing more. A chipped corner, a small gap or a ragged edge is a job for composite bonding, which adds material with little or no drilling. When several teeth need a new shape and a new colour at once, composite or porcelain veneers do both. Crowded or crooked teeth are usually straightened with Invisalign before anything cosmetic is added. Plenty of people combine two or three, always in the same order: straighten, whiten, then bond or veneer. A free consultation at Peninsula Dentists in Greenwich, or a photo on WhatsApp, will tell you which applies to you.
Begin with the Complaint, Not the Treatment
| What bothers you | First treatment to consider |
|---|---|
| Teeth are healthy but yellow or dull | Whitening |
| A chip, a worn edge or a small gap | Composite bonding |
| Several teeth need new shape and colour | Composite or porcelain veneers |
| Teeth are crowded, crooked or rotated | Invisalign, then anything else |
| One tooth is dark, or stain that whitening cannot lift | Bonding or a single veneer on that tooth |
Most people already know what they dislike about their smile; they just do not know what it is called. "Too yellow", "that corner", "the gap", "they look short" and "the one that doesn't match" each point to a different answer, and the sections that follow take them in turn. A daylight photo is enough for Dr Pei to give you a first steer before you book anything.
Whitening Changes Colour and Nothing Else
Whitening lightens natural enamel from within. It will not alter the shape of a tooth, and it has no effect on fillings, bonding, crowns or veneers. At Peninsula Dentists you can choose between two systems. Boutique home whitening uses custom trays from an iTero Element scan and professional gel worn for a short time each day over two to three weeks. Enlighten combines home trays with a finishing visit in the practice and guarantees a B1 shade; we are an Enlighten Centre of Excellence. Yellow teeth respond best. Grey shades take longer, and we tell you what is realistic before you start.
Boutique is £350, or £315 for plan members, and Enlighten is £650. Home whitening is also built into every Invisalign and bonding package.2 Short-lived sensitivity is normal and fades once you stop. Results usually hold for a year or more, and you keep the trays to top up. UK law restricts whitening to registered dental professionals and to adults. The whitening page compares the two systems.

Bonding: A New Shape, the Tooth Left Intact
Composite bonding builds tooth-coloured resin onto the enamel in thin layers of different shades, which are then sculpted and polished until they disappear into the tooth. In most cases nothing, or almost nothing, is drilled away, no injection is needed, and the whole thing is done in one or two visits. It is from £375 per tooth, or in packages of four to ten teeth from £1,550 with home whitening included.2
It is the right tool for chipped or worn edges, small gaps, teeth that look short or uneven, one tooth that is a different shape from its neighbours, and white or brown marks in the enamel. On average it lasts three to five years before a refresh, and a chip is usually rebuilt in one quick visit. It is a poor match for crowded teeth, which need moving rather than adding to, and heavy grinders chip it more often. Our composite bonding page has before-and-after cases.
Veneers Change Shape and Colour Across the Smile
A veneer covers the entire visible face of a tooth. Composite veneers are layered by hand in the chair over one or two visits, with little or no preparation, and cost the same as bonding at £375 per tooth. Porcelain veneers are made in a laboratory from an iTero Element scan and planned by Dr Pei Xian Chen using digital smile design. Porcelain is the most natural-looking and stain-proof material available and often lasts 10 to 15 years or more, but a fine layer of enamel usually has to come off first, and that cannot be undone. They are from £650 per tooth over three visits in three to four weeks, with a trial smile along the way.2
Veneers are the answer when both colour and shape need to change: deep discolouration that gel cannot shift, one dark tooth, front teeth full of old fillings, or earlier veneers and bonding that have stained or worn. Our veneers page sets the two materials side by side.
Where Whitening Stops
For anyone whose only complaint is colour, whitening is the first step and very often the last. It does have boundaries. It cannot close a gap or lengthen a short tooth. Grey or banded discolouration lightens more slowly than yellow, and a single dead tooth may stay darker than those around it. It leaves fillings, crowns, bonding and veneers exactly as they were, so any of those on front teeth may need refreshing afterwards to blend in with the brighter enamel.
None of that is a reason to skip it. If colour was the issue and whitening fixes it, you are finished. If the shape still nags at you once the colour is right, bonding or veneers follow, matched to your new shade, and nothing you have paid for is wasted.
Where Bonding Stops
Bonding is the gentlest way to change the shape of a tooth, which is why it is usually our first suggestion. It is not always the best one. Hiding a very dark tooth needs a thick layer of composite, and thick composite looks heavy. Teeth that are mostly filling offer little sound enamel to bond to. Heavy grinders chip composite edges and come back for repairs more often than porcelain would need. And a whole-smile change that you want to last well past five years tends to be better in porcelain.
Crowding is the other boundary. Composite can soften the look of one slightly rotated tooth, but it adds bulk rather than moving anything, so crowded teeth bonded over end up looking wider, not straighter. Aligning them first with Invisalign usually means thinner bonding afterwards, or none.
Doing More Than One: The Sequence
When two or three treatments are combined, the order is always the same: straighten, then whiten, then bond or veneer. Straightening first puts each tooth where it belongs before anything is added, so any bonding or veneer can be thinner or dropped altogether. Whitening comes second because composite and porcelain are colour-matched to the teeth around them on the day and will not lighten later. We leave roughly two weeks after whitening for the shade to settle before anything is matched to it.
That sequence is the backbone of a smile makeover: a single design, with the treatments ordered so the result lasts. The design is drawn on photographs of your own face, tried in your mouth as a trial smile before anything permanent happens, and both are included in your treatment fee. Your written plan lists each step and the gap between them.
