Invisalign or Home Kits?
What separates dentist-led Invisalign from remote, mail-order aligner treatment, why it matters for your teeth and gums, and what to check before paying for either.
What's the Difference Between Invisalign and at-Home Aligners?
The aligners look similar; the care around them doesn't. Invisalign at a dental practice starts with an in-person examination, X-rays and an iTero Element scan, so gum disease or decay is picked up before any tooth is moved, and you're seen in person every 6 to 8 weeks so the plan can change if a tooth lags. Mail-order aligners are generally planned at a distance, and no one looks in your mouth. At Peninsula Dentists on Greenwich Peninsula, Dr Pei Xian Chen provides Invisalign from £1,795, with refinements, Vivera retainers and whitening included, after a free consultation.
The Difference at a Glance
| Feature | Invisalign with Dr Pei | Remote at-home aligners |
|---|---|---|
| Clinical examination with X-rays | Yes, before anything is planned | Rarely |
| 3D scan | iTero Element, taken in the practice | DIY impression kit or a high-street scan |
| Progress reviews | Face to face every 6 to 8 weeks | Mostly by app or photo |
| Gums and teeth assessed | Before starting and at every review | Often unchecked |
| Retainers | Vivera, included | Depends on the company |
The plastic works the same way in both, applying light pressure so the bone around each root gradually remodels. What differs is everything surrounding the aligners. In a practice, a dentist examines you, X-rays and scans your teeth, plans each movement, bonds attachments where they're needed, reviews progress in the chair every 6 to 8 weeks, and changes course if a tooth isn't keeping up. With at-home treatment, most of those steps happen at a distance, and some are skipped altogether.
Why the Examination Comes First
Moving teeth is a clinical procedure, not a consumer purchase. Push teeth through gums that are already inflamed and the bone around them is lost faster; leave a small cavity untreated through a year of aligner wear and it grows. X-rays and an examination also reveal the length and health of the roots, the level of bone, the state of any crowns or fillings and how your bite works, all of which limit how safely teeth can be moved.
At Peninsula Dentists, Dr Pei Xian Chen examines your teeth and gums at the free consultation before a single movement is planned, and if anything needs treating first, you hear about it there and then. A selfie and a tray of putty cannot show anyone what is going on below the gumline.
Want a Proper Assessment First?
A free consultation with Dr Pei includes an examination, an iTero Element scan and a simulation.
Scans, Attachments and the Limits of Remote Planning
Here, your teeth are recorded with an iTero Element, a handheld digital scanner that captures an accurate 3D model in a few minutes without any impression material. That model is the foundation of your simulation and of every stage of the plan, so each aligner fits only as well as the scan is accurate. A home kit relies on you taking a clean impression of your own teeth, often in front of the bathroom mirror, and any distortion carries through into aligners that don't sit properly.
Certain movements also need someone working in your mouth. Attachments, the tooth-coloured bumps that let the plastic grip, have to be bonded on, and sometimes a sliver of enamel is polished from between two teeth to make room. Fully remote treatment rarely includes either. That restricts it to simpler movements, and it helps explain why some at-home cases stop short of the result they were promised.
Reviews and Refinements
With Invisalign here, you come in every 6 to 8 weeks. Dr Pei checks each tooth is following the plan, inspects the attachments and gum health, then hands over the next aligners. A tooth that has started to lag is spotted mid-course instead of at the finish. If the final result needs polishing once the main series is done, refinement aligners are already part of your package.
Photo-based monitoring catches some problems. It can't tell whether an aligner is fully seated, check how your back teeth meet or pick up the first signs of gum inflammation, and those details largely decide how well a case ends.
When Something Goes Wrong
In a practice, the dentist who planned your treatment can revise it, order refinements or deal with a problem in the chair, and stays responsible for you throughout. A cracked aligner, a tooth that has stalled or a bite that suddenly feels off all have an obvious next step: an appointment.
With at-home aligners, what happens next rests entirely with the company that sold them. In late 2023 one of the biggest providers closed, leaving many customers mid-treatment with aligners that had stopped fitting and nobody to supply retainers. Because aligners are made to one company's plan, a dentist cannot just carry on with them, so most of those patients needed a fresh assessment and a new course.
What Invisalign Costs Here
Invisalign at Peninsula Dentists runs from £1,795 for Lite, through £3,000 for Moderate, to £3,500 for Comprehensive, depending on how much your teeth need to move. Whichever you need, the price includes refinements, Vivera retainers, whitening, scans, X-rays and a visit to our hygienist.2 There's no charge for the consultation: a £40 deposit holds the appointment and comes back to you once you've attended. Your fee is fixed in writing before treatment begins, and our Invisalign cost guide sets out the three packages.
At-home aligners usually look cheaper at first glance. To compare fairly, add the things the headline leaves out: an examination and X-rays, retainers, refinements if the first series falls short, and in-person reviews. Because every package is over £1,500, you can spread the cost with Chrysalis Finance, with 0% terms over 6 or 12 months for approved applicants; the finance page has the details.
Part-Way Through at-Home Treatment?
If you've begun remote aligners and something feels wrong, whether that's pain, teeth that aren't moving or aligners that no longer fit, book a free consultation and bring any records you have. Dr Pei will check your teeth and gums, scan them on the iTero Element to find out how far they've actually moved, and talk you through the choices. Another company's aligners can't be continued here, because each set is made to a single plan, so the way forward is usually a new plan, and it may be shorter than you'd expect if much of the movement is done. Either way, you'll leave knowing the actual condition of your teeth, which is exactly what remote treatment can't tell you. For what treatment with us involves, see Invisalign for adults.
Questions
This guide explains the options in general terms. Only an examination can tell you which of them suits your own teeth.
