Aligners or Fixed Braces?

A side-by-side look at clear aligners and fixed braces for adults, covering appearance, comfort, food, cleaning, timescales and cost, and how to work out which your teeth need.

The short answer

Should Adults Choose Invisalign or Braces?

For most adults with crowded, spaced or crooked teeth, Invisalign does the same job as fixed braces more discreetly and comfortably: no brackets, no wire tightening, and reviews spaced 6 to 8 weeks apart. Braces remain the stronger option for some severe bite and jaw problems, and for anyone unsure they can manage 20 to 22 hours of aligner wear daily. At Peninsula Dentists on Greenwich Peninsula, a free consultation and iTero Element scan with Dr Pei Xian Chen shows which suits your teeth. Invisalign starts from £1,795, and if braces would serve you better, we'll tell you.

Underneath, the biology is identical. Each method presses lightly and steadily on the teeth, and the bone around the roots reshapes to let them move. Where they differ is in how the force is delivered, how they fit into daily life and which movements they handle best. In the typical adult case the finished smile looks much the same either way, so the decision tends to rest on appearance, routine and how much responsibility you're happy to take on.

How Each System Moves Teeth

A fixed brace is a set of small brackets glued to the front surface of each tooth and linked by an archwire. At each appointment the wire is adjusted or swapped for a stiffer one, and the teeth are drawn along it. Nothing depends on you remembering anything, and in experienced hands a brace can steer large or awkward movements with real precision.

Invisalign replaces brackets and wire with a sequence of clear aligners. Each is shaped a fraction differently from the one before and is worn for one to two weeks. Small tooth-coloured bumps called attachments are bonded to certain teeth so the plastic has something to grip. The whole sequence is planned on screen from your iTero Element scan, so you can preview the likely outcome before committing. Aligners move teeth only while they're being worn. Being able to remove them is their main appeal, and having to put them back is their main risk.

When Aligners Are the Stronger Option

Aligners suit most adults with crowding, spacing, rotations or mild to moderate bite problems, particularly where appearance and comfort are priorities. They're also the natural choice when teeth have shifted since braces as a teenager, which is often a short Lite case.

  • Clear plastic that colleagues and clients rarely notice
  • Out at mealtimes, so food and cleaning stay normal
  • No brackets to catch your cheeks and no wires to snap
  • Reviews every 6 to 8 weeks and nothing to tighten in between
  • A simulation of the probable result before you sign up

If you present to clients in Canary Wharf, have a wedding on the calendar or would simply rather not spend a year with metal on show, aligners are usually the better fit.

When Braces Are the Stronger Option

Where a bite problem comes from the jaws themselves rather than the teeth, or the mismatch is severe, fixed braces are usually needed, occasionally combined with jaw surgery. Braces also give more predictable results for a few particular movements: turning a badly rotated canine or premolar, raising or lowering a tooth within the bone, and closing a gap left by an extraction. They're the sensible route, too, for anyone who suspects they won't keep aligners in for 20 to 22 hours a day, because a brace works regardless.

If your assessment points to braces, Dr Pei will say so clearly, explain the reasons and set out your options, which may mean referral to a specialist orthodontist. Using aligners where braces would do a better job helps nobody. Our aim is the right treatment for your teeth, whoever provides it.

Living with Each: Comfort, Food and Cleaning

Aligners have smooth edges, so what you mostly feel is a day or two of tightness each time you change to a new set, more pressure than pain for most people. Braces tend to irritate the lips and cheeks, particularly in the first few weeks, and a loose bracket or a wire that has slipped and started to poke means an extra appointment.

Because aligners come out for meals, no food is banned. The trade-off is brushing before they go back in, and sticking to water while they're in. With braces, crunchy, sticky and chewy foods put the brackets at risk, and bits of food lodge around the wire.

Cleaning shows the clearest gap. With aligners your routine doesn't change. Braces take longer to clean and call for interdental brushes or floss threaders, and plaque that sits beside a bracket for months can leave white marks on the enamel. With either, keep your hygiene visits going. A Diamond Smile Clean with Airflow, £134, cleans gently around attachments and brackets.2

Timescales and Cost

For cases that suit both, the timelines are close: a few months for slight crowding or relapse, 12 to 18 months for more involved movement, and most Invisalign courses finishing somewhere between 6 and 18 months. The difference is reliability. A brace keeps working whether or not you think about it, whereas aligners stay on schedule only when worn 20 to 22 hours a day.

Invisalign at Peninsula Dentists costs from £1,795 for Lite, £3,000 for Moderate and £3,500 for Comprehensive, with refinements, Vivera retainers, whitening, scans, X-rays and a hygiene visit in every package.2 The Invisalign cost guide matches packages to cases. If you're weighing up a braces quote, ask whether retainers, review visits and repairs to broken brackets are covered, as they often aren't.

Retainers Come with Either

Whichever route you take, teeth try to return to where they were, so both end in retainers: full-time for a short period, then nightly for the long term. Vivera retainers are part of every Invisalign package here. After braces, people are usually given removable retainers, a slim wire fixed to the inner surface of the front teeth, or both. Our retainers guide covers wear schedules and care.

The simplest way to choose is a free consultation. Dr Pei scans your teeth on the iTero Element and runs a simulation of what aligners could achieve. If your bite would be better served another way, you'll hear that at the same visit, with the alternatives explained.

Questions

Does Invisalign take longer than braces?Usually not. For cases suited to both, the timescales are similar: a few months for small corrections and a year to 18 months for bigger movements. With aligners the deciding factor is wear time, because teeth only follow the plan while the aligners are in for 20 to 22 hours a day.
Will aligners or braces change how I speak?Either can make you lisp slightly for a few days while your tongue gets used to something new in your mouth. It fades quickly. Reading aloud for a few minutes each evening during the first week helps you adapt faster, whichever you choose.
Are there braces that are harder to see?Yes. Ceramic braces use tooth-coloured brackets, and lingual braces are fitted to the back of the teeth; a specialist orthodontist can advise on both. Both are still fixed in place, so eating, cleaning and appointments work much as they do with metal ones.
Can I move from braces to Invisalign part-way through? In some cases. If you're part-way through braces elsewhere and want to switch, come for a consultation with whatever records you have. An iTero scan reveals how much movement is still needed and whether aligners could finish the job. Any switch should be agreed with the clinician currently treating you.
Which works better for crowded teeth? Both handle crowding well, and mild to moderate crowding is among the most common reasons people choose aligners. Very severe crowding, especially where teeth need to be removed to create space, can be more predictable with fixed braces, and Dr Pei will tell you if that applies to you.

This guide explains the options in general terms. Only an examination can tell you which of them suits your own teeth.
