"Turkey Teeth": The Risks
How crowns, veneers and implants abroad compare with treatment at home, what tends to go wrong, the questions to ask before you fly, and what to do if you need repairs.
Should I Have My Teeth or Implants Done in Turkey, or in London?
"Turkey teeth" is the popular name for a complete set of crowns or veneers fitted abroad, frequently after healthy teeth have been ground down hard, and the same clinics increasingly sell full-arch implants completed inside a week. The upfront price is lower. What is usually missing is time for healing, a guarantee that works from London, and a dentist on hand if problems appear; the British Dental Association has warned about the complications patients bring home. Before booking, find out precisely what is planned, how much tooth will go, how long any implants will heal and who will look after you once you are back. Our second opinions are free.
What "Turkey Teeth" Means
"Turkey teeth" is shorthand for a very white, very even smile built from a complete set of crowns or veneers, usually during a short trip overseas. Turkey is the destination people know best, though several other countries run the same model. Plenty of patients are pleased with how they look. The trouble usually lies in how much healthy tooth is sacrificed to get that look, and in what happens after the flight home to London.
Crowns and Veneers Are Different Things
| Feature | Veneer | Crown |
|---|---|---|
| What it covers | The front surface | The entire tooth |
| How much tooth goes | Little or none | A great deal, all the way around |
| Can it be undone? | Possibly, where the enamel was left intact | No |
| Risk to the nerve | Low | Higher, because so much is removed |
Much of what is advertised abroad as veneers is in fact crowns, which demand far more filing of the natural tooth. That step is permanent: from then on that tooth must always be crowned, and each replacement starts the cycle again. The pictures of filed-down stumps that circulate on social media show what healthy teeth prepared for crowns look like underneath.

Dental Implants Abroad
The same clinics increasingly promote complete sets of implants, often sold as "All-on-4 in a week", at perhaps a third of a London fee. Here is what that week tends to include, and what it leaves out.
- A compressed timetable. Extractions, implants and sometimes the permanent bridge are all done within days. Practice in the UK is to give implants about three months to fuse with the bone before the permanent bridge goes on, because loading them too soon is one of the commonest causes of failure. Fixed temporary teeth on the day of surgery are possible here too, on our Same-Day and Premium pathways where the bone allows; it is the permanent bridge that should wait.1
- No one checking the healing. Once you are back in London, there is no one to look at your gums and bite over the first week, month and quarter, the checks where small problems usually surface.
- A guarantee that is hard to use. A warranty normally means going back to the clinic. An implant that fails six months on means another flight, another hotel and more time off, or paying a UK practice to start over.
- Unknown components. To attach a new crown or bridge, a UK implant dentist must know the exact implant system. If the brand is missing from your records, repairs become harder and more expensive.
Implants placed abroad can and often do work. The risk lies less in the country than in the rushed schedule and the missing aftercare.
Where It Goes Wrong
The British Dental Association has raised concerns about the complications patients bring back. After crowns and veneers, the common ones are sensitivity, nerves that die and need root canal treatment, gums inflamed by over-thick edges, and a bite that no longer feels right. After implants, they are infection, implants that fail to fuse with the bone, and bridges loaded onto implants that were not yet ready.
Repairing any of this in the UK tends to be harder and dearer than the original treatment, and it is left to a dentist who did not do the work and frequently cannot tell exactly what was done.
Comparing the Real Cost
A London quote and an overseas quote seldom cover the same things. Before comparing them, add in:
- Flights and hotels for the first trip, plus any return trip the guarantee requires
- Days off work, both for the treatment and for any repair trips
- A consultation and CT scan in the UK, if the overseas clinic plans only from photos
- Follow-up care in the UK, which a practice here will charge for, since the original work was not theirs
- Replacing anything that fails, which an overseas guarantee will not cover from London
At Peninsula Dentists, one implant with its crown starts at £2,250, and a fixed full arch, CT scan included, starts at £9,300.2 Both come with our five-year guarantee for non-smokers who keep up three-monthly hygiene visits, and using it means a ride on the Jubilee line to North Greenwich rather than a flight. Every implant fee is listed in our implant cost guide. With veneers, doing less often looks better and costs less too, as our veneers cost guide explains.
Questions to Put to Any Clinic, Here or Abroad
- Exactly what is being proposed: veneers or crowns? Implants, and on what schedule?
- How much of each tooth will be removed, and what is the reason for that amount?
- Who is carrying out the treatment, what qualifications do they hold and where are they registered?
- What materials, implant system and dental laboratory will be used?
- How long will implants be left to heal before the permanent teeth go in?
- What does the guarantee cover, and how is aftercare arranged after I fly home?
- If a repair is needed, who does it and who pays?
A good clinic anywhere will answer every one of these in writing. Be cautious of one that replies with a price instead.
Alternatives Closer to Home
If you want a brighter, straighter smile, a gentler plan usually looks more natural: straighten with aligners, whiten, and finish with bonding or a handful of veneers, all tried in your mouth first as a trial smile. If teeth are missing, implants can be planned on our own CT scanner, placed with MegaGen R2 guided surgery and left to heal properly, with every follow-up visit a short journey across SE London instead of a flight.
Already Had Treatment Abroad?
Bring any records, X-rays or scans you were given, and the implant brand if you know it. Dr Riaz will examine the work, take a CT scan if it would help, and explain plainly what is sound, what should be monitored and what needs fixing, from a failing crown to an implant that has not integrated. There is no judgement involved: we are here to care for the teeth you have today. A second opinion is free, and if you are in pain, call before 9.30am to be seen the same day.
